OOC: This is something of a world-building exercise, and since there is an actual Marvel character being played (Solo) I thought I'd give a few details on "the history of the world" from the perspective of the characters.
The game year is 2009, but many events you know (as players and comic book readers) from the comics have not happened yet, and the world is different in that Marvel and DC characters co-exist in the same reality and always have. Campaign wise, things that were happening in Marvel Comics published in 1982 - 1984 and DC Comics in the same time frame (but with post-Crisis versions of characters) are "current events." Captain Mar-Vell has just died (which happened in comics published in April 1982) For simplicity's sake, 3.5 years worth of Marvel Comics = 1 game year.
Solo didn't make his first appearance in Marvel Comics until October 1986, so in rough game campaign terms, as far as Solo's origin story, he's never met Spider-Man yet, and hasn't fought the Sinister Six. He's just as much the newbie as the new characters.
The Omega Strike mission that appears in Solo's origin story happened roughly one game year ago. After the betrayal of his Omega Strike counter-terrorist team, James Bourne (Solo) went underground, and has been underground since. Likely hitting al-Qaeda terrorists as a one-man war on terror.
James Bourne is currently wanted by several law enforcement and intelligence agencies, including SHIELD, because his name has not been cleared for the disaster of Omega Strike's first mission against terrorists that hijacked a plane in Italy in which all of Solo's team were killed by two other Omega Strike members, Emil Tessler and Gabriel Grant, who framed Bourne for the killing of the team as they themselves profited from bribes from the very terrorists they were sent to fight. Bourne escaped that betrayal with a gunshot wound to the stomach (now healed), and is (currently in this game campaign) in the earliest days of his new career as Solo.
The history of Solo diverges from here, of course. As far as Solo's character sheet, the only thing different is that he does not have Captain America or Spider-Man as Contacts. He does have Silver Sable as a Contact, because she's into the dirty dirty secret mercenary bidness, and that's Solo in a nutshell.
