so I finally got to see X-men 1st class, and to be honest I thought it was an ok movie, even with all the liberties which were taken with the characters in the movie.
That is up to the point where Magneto kills Shaw. We clearly see Shaw absorb a punch thrown by Magneto, yet a few scenes later he is incapable of absorbing the kinetic energy of a coin thrown/pressed aganist his forehead? WTF? that one moment kinda ruined an otherwise ok movie for me.

The coin didn't hit him, it more burrowed into him.

Well to me that makes even less sense a coin that slow would have a very low amount of kinetic energy - easily absorbed by someone like Shaw ... I dont know - it still doesnt make sense t me

Yeah, I enjoyed 1st-Class a lot but Shaw's demise was really the only thing that kind of bugged me. The one way I can reason it is to think of it in terms of quickly slapping your hand flat into water vs. slowly dipping/poking your finger through it; I guess Shaw's kinetic absorption reacts well to velocity, but not so great vs. slow and consistent pressure

(Water with lots of corn starch as an example.) If you keep hitting the liquid quickly (dance or run on top of it while keeping your feet moving) then the liquid turns solid, holding you up. However, if you touch it gently, or stop moving, it's liquid and you can move right through. Kinetic energy from fast movement is handled different than pressure.

I suppose that is one way of looking at it, but to me, it would have made more sense to have Magneto wrap him up in metal and leaving him to suffocate, or even drown if he placed him in the water afterwards.

Or just squash Shaw's noggin like a ripe grape with the helmet (which if I remember correctly was metal; it's been a while since I've seen it so I can't recall if it was ferrous or not but I thought there was a scene where he floats it to him or maybe I'm just dreaming idk)
