The city was going crazy.
Last Saturday night, a creature, some say a "Frankenstein's Monster," busted up Friscoe's Bar and Grill, the hangout of the Crimson Smiles gang. The Lower East Side dive wasn't all that far from the Higher Ground coffee house where Chris Collins worked, but he was off that night. Three of those clowns were killed, bashed to death with an uprooted street sign. The Smiles were remnants of the Gotham Joker's old gang, moved up north from Jersey after that psychopath was locked away by Batman and now carving a niche for themselves in Manhattan's criminal underbelly.
As the Raptor, Chris had beaten some answers out of some Smiles punks on Sunday night. Their stories all came up consistently. Their hangout was attacked by this monstrous creature that appeared out of nowhere after they refused to make tribute payments to a new gang calling itself "The Faces of Fear" that threatened them over the phone. The creature disappeared in a flash of lightning when the cops arrived, leaving only a pile of dust behind. Nobody knew who this new "Faces of Fear" gang was.
Chris wanted to investigate this new gang further, but on Monday night, Cassandra Singer, his co-worker at the Higher Ground called in sick and he covered her shift. Cassandra was a student at Empire State University, both brainy and beautiful, a bi-racial physics major who mixed a gypsy wardrobe with combat boots and a weird attitude. She was well-liked by her co-workers, Chris included, and he didn't mind filling in for her.
Tuesday night saw another wave of violence. First there were driveby shootings in Central Park, targeting the Gutter Pirates and the Broad Daylight Killaz, two of Manhattan's roughest street gangs. Some new superheroes stopped that shooting spree, a former Stark weapons designer named Mike Sherman now with superstrength and calling himself Oldschool, a rockstar looking teleporter with a baseball bat calling himself Flashdance, and some blue robot called Shockwave. Later those heroes were on the scene when Hank's Tavern, the hangout of the Flashing Blades gang, was attacked by "monsters."
Wednesday afternoon had been eventful. First there was a huge truckbomb explosion at the Port Authority docks, followed by the new heroes Oldschool, Flashdance, and Shockwave battling robots, alongside four other unidentified heroes. Later that night while Raptor was knocking Flashing Blades members around, apparently these heroes responded to a "monster attack" at Starky's Pool Hall, the hangout of the fascistically anti-mutant gang called the Buzz Cuts. The "monsters" either had accompanied the "Faces of Fear" gang, or ARE the Faces of Fear gang. The Buzzcuts were seeking revenge. Apparently the monsters were running with Gutter Pirates and Bat Boys gang members. Which presented the possibility that the "Faces of Fear" gang was an alliance of the GPs and BBs, with some of them empowered by this new "Kick" drug on the street to take on monstrous forms. That still didn't explain how they could disappear into thin air.
Following up on the attack on the Flashing Blades hangout, Wednesday night, Raptor roughed up some Blades gang members and learned that it had began as an ambush by an old gang called the Bat Boys. The Flashing Blades leadership was hospitalized, and some little thug teenager named Tommy Bifrost was now running the Flashing Blades gang after he apparently was abducted by this new "Faces of Fear" gang and escaped from their captivity after they had attacked the Buzz Cuts using him as bait. Tommy Bifrost is a mutant, and he's trying to organize various street gangs into an army to go after the Faces of Fear.
Apparently the monsters went on to smash a nightclub owned by Wilson Fisk that night. Fisk has a reputation on the street as being well connected with organized crime. At the same time, apparently offices owned by the Nefaria crime family were smashed by a reptilian creature.
Thursday, this morning, brought new headaches. The Lower East Side was virtually shut down after what witnesses described as a mutant attack that caused thousands of people to fall asleep in the middle of what they were doing, which caused hundreds of car accidents and fires. And then, a news helicopter was shot down by a flying man that could shoot ice from his hands. This was agitating anti-mutant sentiments further. It seemed inevitable that the hotly debated and highly controversial Mutant Registration Act working its way through Congress was now surely going to pass.
The Higher Ground coffeehouse was closed Thursday night, after the chaos this morning in the Lower East Side, the owner decided to stay closed. People were on edge, angry over the escalated gang violence, the pier bombing, and the mutant attacks.
With the night off work, Chris would patrol as the Raptor. The tensions in the city were so high that the night was sure to bring violence. This city was getting uglier by the minute.
Chris looked at the dashboard clock in his modified van. 7:02 pm. As the last rays of the sun dropped behind the western horizon, the city nightlife was waking up. And like cockroaches, the streets would soon crawl with criminals. It was time to track down this new Faces of Fear gang. This Tommy Bifrost would be the best angle to pursue. As acting leader of the Flashing Blades gang and rumored to be trying to unite street gangs against this new Faces of Fear gang, he might know something. The Blades did muscle work for Hammerhead on occasion, and Hammerhead's goons hung out at a place called "The Roaring Twenties." If anyone knew how to find Tommy Bifrost, it would be one of Hammerhead's gunsels...
ooc: welcome to the game, Raptor. Throw in whatever preparations you want. Raptor's going to cross paths with the rest of the heroes... eventually
