I've been giving the character, Mephisto alot of thought lately with all the discussions about him going on at CMF. His origins/history doesn't work for me... at all.
It seems consensus that he's a Class Two demon, right after Chthon and Set (and the other Class Ones). The problem I have with it is that Chthon, Set and Gaea are linked to Earth's creation and the universe is much older than our world, yet Mephisto seems more of a universal abstract than a Earthen one.
He's constantly up to his armpits in events that aren't on Earth or even our Solar System (sometimes not even in our dimension). I remember the Infinity Gauntlet when Mephisto and Thanos were talking about the suicide of the being called Nemesis and the creation and rebirth of demons, I wonder if there was more truth than lie.
Mephisto seemed to know abit more than he should about events that should have happened well before his time. Now I understand that Mephisto is an occult supergenius and could have mystically researched it, but if in fact he was from this initial brood, it would make a lot more sense than just being an Earth demon (Hell-Lord).
Galactus, Eternity, High Tribunal all seem to recognize Mephisto as a universal abstract. I don't recall reading any of the other Hell-lords having such cosmic discussions and confrontations.
I think Mephisto is from this initial brood of demons that Nemesis created and destroyed. Further, I do not think he's a Class Two demon, at all and that he actually just acts as one. He doesn't seem as restrained as the other Hell-Lords in regards to acting outside of his realm.
Some people feel that the reason for this is that Mephisto formed a relation with these initial demons (from Nemesis) and they showed him how to expand his influence and power to the rest of the multiverse becoming a universal abstract.
Which is fine and dandy, just being demons, I can't wrap my head around the idea that they'd actually help a young (universally speaking) and up-and-comer, Mephisto do anything but fail. So how exactly would he convince them to share anything with him when they were around since the dawn of creation and should have been better able to deal with the nature of demons than non-demons.
I realize that comic histories get re-written daily and trying to make sense of them is almost futile but I am interested in hearing your opinions. I just read an article by a comic fan where he/she ranked the cosmic beings by rank and Mephisto was rated with the other Hell-Lords as a Tier 7 : 2nd Class Universal Abstract Entity Dimensional God. I thinking the others are cashing in on Mephistos status and are undeserving of being placed above a Tier 8 Galactus (highly fed) and the Celestials.
For any interested, here's the link.
